People think this is "dirt" or red sand in the render or iron /rust!!This red and green staining is Trentepohlia which is Algae.It blows in the wind and colonises all external substrates.It uptakes minerals and creates beta- carotenoids which gives it the red colour.This in turn encourages the growth of fungus.The symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi creates yellow or white lichen.Moss will grow when algae is present.This is not "dirt".This is nature!We apply a natural approach to work with nature.Simple!!www.hennessy-ward.com#algae#lichen#fungus#cleaning

Another private message...Is it important to clean the moss on a roof?Absolutely emphatically Yes!!!!Moss holds moisture and grows rapidly. It stays damp for much longer than the roof material.This keeps the roof damp.When the weather is cold and we have a frost this moisture will expand like frozen water in your freezer.This is called the Freeze-thaw cycle.This can happen many times over the winter months and it causes cracks and leaks.Now you have damp moss sitting on cracks and staying wet.The timber trusses can get wet, damp, have timber rot, mould, bacteria etc...Water ingress is a huge problem.Then a big storm might blow some of these loose slates off. Now the problem is exacerbated and the roof is compromised.We know that algae is the very first microorganism to grow. It feeds fungus and moss.Lichen is produced when algae and fungus are present. This is a symbiotic relationship.At Hennessy-Ward Façade Cleaning Specialists we simply kill the algae and everything else dies off.Preventative maintenance is absolutely essential to maintain the integrity of any building and prevent problems and water ingress.Power washing is absolutely the wrong thing to do.Steaming is just a silly thing to do.These are plants. Doff System:I had a private message from someone and I have decided to turn my reply into a post.Doff is the latest trend and it has its place in Façade Cleaning.Conservation Architects and Professionals think this is the best way to clean buildings.It's frustrating to watch this happening.Just to clarify...Ireland and the British Isles have a temperate climate, which is the ideal environment for Trentepohlia.Trentepohlia is red and green algae.They produce sugars. Red is beta- carotenoids and green is chlorophyll.Simple.These sugars are food for fungus which is black in colour. It produces melanin like we humans create when we tan.When algae and fungi meet, their symbiotic relationship leads to the growth of lichen.Lichen is usually yellow or white in colour.Lichen produces acid to etch into any substrate.Moss, cyanobacterium and myriad microorganisms will grow on the substrates because they all depend on the existence of algae in the first instance.So...
