Project: Tea HouseHardware: Futura Apex in Powdercoat Scoria RedInterior Designer: Kanat Studio Builder: New Wave ConstructionArchitect: Ethan Hunter ArchitectsPhotographer: Jono ParkerThe foundation of the Tea House project centred around an in depth understanding of the intricate functionalities for ensuring the holistic wellbeing of individuals living with dementia, while also envisioning a space that could seamlessly accommodate the future needs of the eventual occupants. Kanat Studio created a sanctuary on the Te Atatu Peninsula that transcends the confines of traditional dementia aesthetics, embodying a profound sense of warmth and tranquillity. The InspirationResearch shows that creating familiar environments reduces accidents and fosters independence. Inspired by Australian rainforest town Kuranda, where the client's mother lived, the exterior colour palette was chosen to evoke familiarity and connection to nature. The mist green hues aimed to create a secluded green house, eventually intertwined with vines, reminiscent of Kuranda's lush environment.Inside, natural materials and clear architectural elements were employed to mitigate visual-perceptual difficulties associated with dementia progression. Avoiding shiny surfaces and dark spaces, the design aimed for a calming, uplifting atmosphere. Soft, soothing colours were preferred over stark contrasts. The intention was to create a safe and stimulating environment. The HardwareThe hardware selection balanced user-friendliness for dementia patients with long-term aesthetic appeal for the future homeowners. The Apex lever, a simple yet timeless design, complemented the warm, textured interior with Japanese influences. Dulux powder coating in Scoria red accented interior spaces, enhancing spatial recognition. This colour choice facilitated clear articulation of hardware elements, with defined contrast aiding in spatial feature recognition. The MatchTheir aim was to integrate outdoor elements indoors by applying the exterior Scoria colour used on the veranda to internal door and window hardware through powder coating. This concept extended to lighting fixtures, with light switch and power outlet covers powder coated in the same colour for a cohesive design scheme. Why did you choose Windsor?“Windsor has a great selection and offers colour customisation alongside being the preferred hardware for our window joinery supplier. It was the best and easiest solution to specify Windsor as all our main hardware solutions for this project” – Kate Pilot, Kanat Studio

Project: Fitzroy TerraceHardware: Chalet in Antique BrassLocation: North Fitzroy, MelbourneArchitectural Designer: Dan Gayfer DesignArchitect: Lloyd Hartley Architects In collaboration with Architect Ben Lloyd, Dan Gayfer Design transformed a typical North Melbourne Victorian terrace house situated on a bustling corner street, giving a prime location to make a statement. The project involved retaining the front two rooms as children's bedrooms on the ground floor, while adding a family bathroom and a living space with a sunken dining area opening into a Mediterranean-style courtyard. A second level was introduced to accommodate the master suite including a rooftop terrace. The renovation included removing the post-war lean-to at the end, which is customary in such projects. Working within a compact space, the focus was on maximising the footprint's potential. This involved careful planning and innovative design solutions to optimise every inch of the interior space. The Inspiration The materiality of the building reflects the inner-city Melbourne location with industrious workman like exterior through the usage red brick and other components. They wanted a refined interior by using minimal characteristics and materials to juxtapose the rugged exterior. The HardwareThey were drawn to the refined nature of the lever; it fitted that perfect balance of not too plain but not too over the top with a simplistic design. The finish also coordinated well with the mid-century modern aesthetic and other tones used throughout the interior. The MatchThe Brodware tapware in Statue Bronze finish used in the kitchen and bathrooms and the bronze cabinet handles used on the kitchen joinery. The Challenge Navigating the high voltage power lines with the extension. They are traditionally not common down these streets, land they had to look at offsets on the house extension and not building too close to the lines. Why Windsor? It was an opportunity to work with a new supplier and explore their range. We were impressed with the collection of hardware and finishes, and this Fitzroy project became the inaugural project. Windsor is certainly getting a foot hold of the Australian market.“Windsor stood out from the crowd of door hardware suppliers who had contacted us” – Dan Gayfer.

Project: OrakeiHardware: NIDO Verge in Dark Roman BrassLocation: Auckland, New ZealandInterior Designer: JK-W Interior Architecture and Design & Anna GordonArchitect: Mercer + Mercer📷: Julia Kennerley Picture a residence that was transformed through reclad and renovation into a new narrative, guided by eight years of intimate knowledge. This provided clear direction for how to move rooms and levels based on how the family live, how they like to enjoy the space and ascertain what needed to be improved. Following an overnight stay, the design draws inspiration from the captivating textures and details of Hotel Britomart, fostering warmth, coziness, and seamless indoor/outdoor connectivity. The integration of spaces like the kitchen, dining, and living areas to bring all onto the same level reflects a harmonious flow towards the outdoors, encouraging effortless entertaining and family gatherings.Organic textures and natural elements echo the beauty of nature. The subtle accents of fixtures and fittings soften the home's architectural lines, complementing curved features used throughout, creating a sense of gentle refinement. This project exemplifies a sanctuary where the home’s evolution of design embraces the lifestyle, passions and inspirations for the residents offering an abundance of casual sophistication.

Our team building day yesterday was full of good vibes, good food and “good” coordination skills. We started with the business end - summarising our Q1 strategy progress, highlights and challenges and launched a company wide incentive programme. The team rallied together and put on an impressive lunch to enjoy (complete with some kiwi ingenuity and a custom-built BBQ). We then figured out who are the competitive ones in the business with an indoor bowls competition and lastly got mind blown by our IT Manager turned magician! We’re still puzzled today how he pulled off the tricks!

📣 Article Alert 📣FEEL, FINISH AND FUNCTIONApproaching architectural hardware based on feel, finish and function – a constantly evolving and experimental ethos – drives Windsor Architectural Hardware. This approach is exemplified in a new lever style featuring linear knurling, further elevating the refined elegance of the brand’s popular NIDO range.Defined by sleek edges and a raw texture, the NIDO range is made from solid brass and is available in four contemporary finishes – Matt Black, Brushed Nickel, Graphite Nickel and Matt Satin Brass. The range epitomises precision machining and quality craftsmanship, with blank screws for the external side of the thru-fixing for a clean and minimal look.An extension to the NIDO range, with two new levers embellished with horizontal linear knurling, represents the innovative mindset of Windsor. These knurled handles provide a nuanced tactility whilst referencing the popular reeded and fluted look that is making its way across multiple touchpoints in the home, from island bars and bathroom vanities to glass doors and windows. The detailed linear knurling is further accentuated by Windsor’s signature bespoke hand-finishing – the door handles are hand-finished into Roman Brass or Dark Roman Brass options, adding further depth to the knurling detail.Quality craftsmanship and highly detailed design are embedded within these new additions to the NIDO range, as Windsor’s design team experimented with the sizing of each linear knurl to ensure a finish that was aesthetically pleasing and felt balanced in the hand. Earlier this year, Windsor’s Product Design and Development Manager, Nick Baker, visited both the Salone de Mobile Design Show in Milan and BAU in Munich, a research trip that validated the team’s design approach for the linear knurling on the NIDO levers.Minimalism and complexity unite in the new lever style featuring linear knurling within the NIDO range. A natural evolution of industrial elegance, Windsor Architectural Hardware expands its collection of bespoke finishes to reveal the brand’s refined design approach, robust materiality and innovative ethos.Source: The Local Project

Project: Hicks CottageHardware: Italian Charleston in Oil Rubbed BronzeLocation: QueenstownInterior Design: Verity LawrenceBuilder: Hudson BuildingNestled within the scenic Shotover Country, a once dilapidated 1867 cottage, originally crafted by pioneer Thomas Hicks, stands as a testament to Queenstown's rich heritage. Once a shearing shed and harness haven for draught horses, this Category 3 listed historic gem has undergone a remarkable transformation, orchestrated by a visionary interior designer and builder/owner.Preserving its pioneering legacy, the restoration involved meticulous efforts. The iconic timber shingles roof, a hallmark of its historical significance, was safeguarded beneath a new iron layer treated with hydrochloric acid for an authentic patina. A crumbling rubble stone-built chimney, featuring intricate mortice and tenon joints, was rebuilt with local river stones mirroring the original 1870s pattern. This extensive project included lifting and placing the cottage on concrete blocks, revealing original wooden roof shingles and incorporating new cedar weatherboard clad with old beech sarking fortuitously found on a neighbouring property. A new front door and window frames were added replicating the originals. The interior seamlessly blends modern luxury with historical charm, retaining the original timber while introducing contemporary amenities. Now, this 51-square-meter cottage offers first-class accommodation through Hello Guest, comprising a living room, bedroom and bathroom. Designed as a couples-only sanctuary, it invites visitors to reconnect with Queenstown's captivating history and beauty, providing a unique and immersive experience in the heart of this picturesque landscape.
